Honor Code

Honor code

The Honor Code is our statement on academic integrity and articulates expectations of students in establishing and maintaining the highest standards in academic work.

In addition to a commitment to academic excellence, Saint Joe’s seeks to inspire and prepare young people to live the Gospel. Christ calls us to the Light, to live in the Truth. It is an essential part of the Saint Joe’s experience to live in a community where integrity and honesty are the touchstones of interaction and relationships, and where each member of the community is called to take responsibility for making our school a community of trust and integrity.

No community can exist without honesty. No person can become what God wants him or her to be without growing in love and commitment to integrity and truthfulness.

The Honor Code is built upon four values:

Honesty: to tell the truth; to refrain from lying, cheating or stealing

Integrity: a firm adherence to our values with and without the presence of others

Respect: consideration and treating others as we would like to be treated; this includes bullying in any form: physical or verbal will not be tolerated

Responsibility: being accountable for our actions and accepting the consequences of our actions

Violations of the Honor Code include:

  • Plagiarism
  • Fabrication
  • Obtaining an unfair advantage
  • Aiding and abetting dishonesty
  • Falsification of records or documents
  • Unauthorized access to academic or administrative records or systems
  • Copying from another’s examination paper (or any other work used as the basis of grading) or allowing another to copy from one’s own work

Students who violate the Honor Code receive an F on the assignment. Students who violate the code three times over their tenure as a student will be asked to withdraw. For a complete copy of the policy, see the student handbook.

Students are expected to conduct themselves with integrity and are presumed honorable until proven otherwise.

The Promise will be signed by all students annually and repeated on various occasions:

“I promise before God and members of this community that I will be a person of integrity who will not lie, steal, cheat or plagiarize. I will take responsibility for my decisions. I make this promise in order to build a community of trust and integrity with my brothers and sisters at Saint Joe’s.”

The following pledge must be written by students and signed on all tests, projects, and graded material:

“I pledge that I have neither given nor received unauthorized aid in completing this work.”

This pledge may be abbreviated to the words, “I pledge.” All pledges must be signed.

At the heart of Catholic education is a commitment to each individual student’s growth and development as a whole person.

As more families choose Saint Joe’s, we rely on the generosity of donors like you who believe in our mission to form the next generation of leaders through a high-quality Catholic education.
