Faith Formation

At Saint Joseph's the first pillar is Faith.  This is intentional; for by putting God first, all other things will fall into place.

Saint Joseph's endeavors to bring the person and teachings of Jesus Christ to this time and place under the direction of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown and in accordance with the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.  We believe that every person is a gift from God, and that at our school scholarship in every subject helps our students to better know, love, and serve God through a deeper understanding of his creation. We believe that a Catholic school is a place where students can grow spiritually as they grow intellectually, surrounded by a vibrant faith community that lives the Gospel every day.

At Saint Joseph’s we are proud of our Catholic identity, and we strive every day to form the next generation of passionate Catholic leaders. We hope to show our students that faith is dynamic and that, in the words of Pope Saint John Paul II, “Life with Christ is a wonderful adventure!” This is an invitation that is extended to all people, and so at Saint Joe's we welcome students of all faith traditions.

Theology Curriculum
All students are required to take a Theology course each semester. Instruction is based on the teachings of the Catholic Church, and our curriculum conforms to the standards set by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. In addition to the Bible and the Catechism of the Catholic Church, instructional elements come from the Didache series of textbooks from the Midwest Theological Forum.

Throughout their four years, Saint Joseph's students take the following semester-long courses:

  • 9th Grade: The Old Testament | The New Testament
  • 10th Grade: Who is Jesus? | Catholic Social Teaching
  • 11th Grade: Christian Morality | The Church
  • 12th Grade: The Sacraments | The Paschal Mystery

Mass and Devotions
The focal point of our week is an all-school Mass, typically on Thursday mornings. Students also attend an annual faith retreat, typically held at the beginning of the academic year. Throughout the year, students have the opportunity to participate in various devotions, including the Sacrament of Confession, the Rosary, and Eucharistic Adoration.

Chapel
Each Tuesday all Saint Joseph's students and faculty participate in an all-school chapel service. This service includes prayer, readings from Scripture, reflection, and song.
